Some pizzas are simple with their toppings, like the Neapolitan, but Roman-style pizza celebrates all kinds of sauces, veggies, and proteins.

Directions:

Prepare the Dough:

  • In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast and sugar in warm water. 
  • Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until frothy.
  • In a large bowl, mix the flour and salt. 
  • Create a well in the center and add the yeast mixture and olive oil.
  • Stir until the dough comes together, then knead on a floured surface for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  • Place the dough in an oiled bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 2 hours.
  • For the best texture, refrigerate the dough for 48 hours to develop large air bubbles.

Assemble & Bake the Pizza:

  • Preheat your oven to 475°F (245°C). 
  • If you have a pizza stone, place it in the oven to heat.
  • Punch down the dough and roll it out on a floured surface to a thin, rectangular shape.
  • Transfer the dough to a parchment-lined baking sheet or a preheated pizza stone.
  • Spread the tomato sauce evenly over the dough, leaving a small border around the edges.
  • Sprinkle the shredded mozzarella cheese, followed by cherry tomatoes, black olives, bell peppers, and sausage slices. 
  • Finish with a sprinkle of dried oregano.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for 10-15 minutes or until the crust is golden and crispy, and the cheese is bubbly and slightly browned.
  • Remove from the oven and top with fresh basil leaves and a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil.
  • Slice and serve hot, enjoying the crunchy crust and vibrant toppings of this unique Roman-style pizza.
