2 Cups Coconut Milk
1 Cup Dried Shrimp soaked in water and drained
2 Cups Bread Crumbs soaked in 1 Cup of water
1 Onion finely chopped
2 Cloves Garlic minced
1 Small Red Bell Pepper chopped
1 Small Green Bell Pepper chopped
1 tbsp Ginger grated
2 tbsp Palm Oil or vegetable oil
½ Cup Peanuts ground
½ Cup Cashews ground
1 tsp Paprika Powder
Acc. To Taste Salt
Acc. To Taste Black Pepper Powder
For Garnish Fresh Cilantro Leaves

Vatapá or Brazilian Shrimp Stew is a traditional Brazilian dish originating from the northeastern state of Bahia. This creamy and flavorful seafood stew is a delicious blend of African, Indigenous, and Portuguese culinary influences. Here’s the recipe for Traditional Brazilian Dish Vatapá;

 

Directions:

  • In a blender, combine soaked bread crumbs, coconut milk, and ground peanuts and cashews.
  • Blend until smooth and set aside.
  • In a large pot, heat the palm oil over medium heat. 
  • Add the chopped onion, garlic, and ginger, sautéing until fragrant and golden brown.
  • Add the chopped red and green bell peppers, cooking until softened.
  • Stir in the soaked dried shrimp and fresh shrimp, cooking until the shrimp turns pink.
  • Pour the blended mixture into the pot, stirring continuously. 
  • Add paprika, salt, and pepper to taste.
  • Reduce the heat to low and simmer for about 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the stew thickens to a creamy consistency.
  • Garnish with fresh cilantro and serve hot, traditionally accompanied by white rice and a side of farofa (toasted cassava flour).
