Tteokguk is a beloved Korean dish traditionally served during the Lunar New Year. Symbolizing prosperity and a fresh start, the soup features thinly sliced rice cakes (tteok) in a flavorful broth. The rice cakes, shaped like coins, are believed to bring good fortune and longevity. 

This warm and hearty soup is simple to make, yet deeply satisfying. Enjoy this comforting and auspicious dish for a flavorful start to the year!

Here’s the recipe for Hearty and Beloved Tteokguk;

 

Directions:

  • In a pot, bring the stock to a boil over medium heat.
  • Add the beef and cook until tender, seasoning with soy sauce and garlic.
  • Stir in the rice cakes and cook until they soften and float to the surface (3-5 minutes).
  • Slowly drizzle in the beaten egg, stirring gently.
  • Season the soup with salt and pepper to taste.
  • Ladle the soup into bowls and garnish with seaweed strips, green onions, and a drizzle of sesame oil if desired.
